Hitachi Jumps the CES Gun: Announces 1-Terabyte Hard Drive

A major tech milestone was hit today: Hitachi—one-upping what will likely be similar announcements next week at CES—announced the 1TB hard drive, the first single unit to hit that magical number.

Before you start sending emails, yes, I know that you can purchase terabyte "drives" already, but these are large, external enclosures, often featuring up to four hard drives jammed into a huge, power-hungry case. The Hitachi drive, the Deskstar 7K1000, is a single disk that you can pop into any PC. (The company is also marketing a version for DVRs and set-top boxes.)

The drive is unfortunately not ready to ship today. It's "expected" in the second quarter of the year at a price of $399. No final release date has been announced.

The PC World story linked above notes that Seagate (with Hitachi, these are the market leaders in storage) also has "intentions" to ship a terabyte drive this year but hasn't announced details. I'm meeting with Seagate on Monday, and I fully expect a response at that time. Stay tuned!
